As I always tell travelers who are planning to go to Central America with
me and are frightened by the news from that part of the world, read the
government warnings for where you live.  If you paid attention to every
random drug killing or gang war, you would never leave your house.  Just
use common sense.  It's true that there is a lot of violence out there but
it is not usually aimed at you.  The caveat would be if you are in a part
of the world where the majority of the people are targeting your particular
religion, gender, or ethnicity.

I am totally in favor of safe gun laws and background checks and I think
allowing people to carry automatic weapons into Wallmart is ludicrous.  We
are surrounded by hunters here in SC but most of them know basic gun safety
and aren't aiming at people.
