Paramount meant for the Ferengi to replace the Klingons as the main
adversary of the Federation but they were seen as comical characters by
viewers and relegated to more lighthearted episodes. The Cardassians were
then created as the new nemesis. Of course they changed their looks and the
spelling of their name, and they are now single handedly conquering cable
television. Another case of life imitating art.
