Hi Rick,
Wheel fairings, or "pants", would improve the appearance and the cruise
speed by a small amount, but could be a problem on the grass strips from
which many operated as primary trainers. Mud buildup could cause a rude
stop. Hence, most of the trainers had bare wheels.

but most of the ones I've seen locally have a retractable engine pylon
behind the canopy. They make a powered takeoff and then shut down the
engine, retract it into the fuselage, and fly like a glider.
