The Other Way. It’s frequently wise when one finds excellent light to take the
obvious picture, and then turn and look the other way. Sometimes the other way
is better.
And then there’s Renaissance by Edna St. Vincent Millay, written at age 19:
All I could see from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood;
I turned and looked another way,
And saw three islands in a bay.
So with my eyes I traced the line
Of the horizon, thin and fine,
Straight around till I was come
Back to where I’d started from;
And all I saw from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood.
Written about the view from the top of Mt. Battie in what’s now Camden Hills
State Park, up the road a short piece from where we live. Moose will be
familiar with the view from up there. It is a view to inspire great poetry. And
a good lesson for photographers. <g>
