You have to keep in mind that the total pixel count is an area measure
(width x height). A 2MP increase only translates to a bit more than a
6% increase in the width and height in pixels. For example, the image
width of the 16MP sensor is 4608 pixels. That of the 18MP sensor will
only be about 4890. The pixel height will likely go from 3456 to about
3668. Those sizes yield a sensor with 17,936,520 pixels. The
resolution increase will scarcely be noticeable.
