With the upcoming release of Windows 10 as a freebie upgrade to Win7 and
later Windows systems I began to wonder if there might be refurbished
Win8 systems out there now going for cheap since no one wants them (as
Win8 machines, at least). I hadn't had the thought in my mind for very
long when I received an email ad from Newegg this morning with a good
example of what I had in mind.
This is a refurb'd HP Win8 desktop selling for (after rebate) $149.99.
For that you get a 500GB drive, 4GB memory and Win8 Pro 64-bit. The
processor is not a speed demon by any means (a Dual Core AMD Kabini
E1-2500 1.4Ghz). It's a bit slower than an Intel i3 but the motherboard
still has on empty memory slot so you could fix it up a bit with a
another 4GB of memory or even run it to 12 or 16GB.
It has a DVI-D video socket so can support a modern digital dislay.
Forget the Win8 Pro except that you can upgrade it to Win8.1 if you like
and then to Win10 when it becomes available. You also get the full Pro
set of features in the upgrades.
Expansion is pretty limited... one PCI Express half-length mini card
socket. I think I'd try to add USB 3.0 there if possible.

I think it might be a modern substitute for an old XP machine. Of
course, if you're willing to spend more money, there are more
substantial HP refurb'd machines in the same place. But this one is
dirt cheap.
