Common occurrence. Pure junk. First line of defense in scams such as this one
is the salutation. Emails from legitimate organizations, especially banks and
entities such as PayPal, always use a salutation that includes your actual
name, or the name they have associated with your account. Second line of
defense is to examine the link provided. This one shows some obvious red flags,
most notably the inclusion of “jessicasprague” in one of the links.
My principal modus operandi when dealing with entities such as PayPal or my
banks is to read the email, make a determination as to its legitimacy, and then
go to my browser and type in the address myself, rather than clicking on a
link. For PayPal that would be www.paypal.com. If there’s any kind of issue
with your account, you’ll be informed upon logging into the site.
