Why would / how could ........... four images, one on top of each other,
be superior to a carefully taken single image of the same object ? The
object's slightest movement would surely have upset the clarity of the
final sandwiched images ?

What is meant by "4 image stack"
A four image focus stack. One can use the focusing helicoid or
sometimes better, a focusing rail, moving plane of focus from front
of flower to rear---then combine the images
with software. One can get fancy with an automated gizmo, but it is
not worth much in the wind.

Taken outside to get a nice background at end of Oct in late

Only managed to get four useable shots to stack due to pesky breeze.
Could have used a couple more.
