A belt sander as a lens repair tool! Even the thought made me cringe. Do
you use fine grit?

You're not sanding the lens, just the rubber stopper. You need to remove
sufficient material from the stopper so that it won't contact the lens. You
just want the stopper to contact the lock ring that's hoding the objective lens
in.
Which is why a sink/bath stopper with hollow center is easier if the right size.
