It doesn't happen every winter, more like every 10-12 years. Back in 1982
(?) we had a series of three intense Pacific storms a week apart, and we were
in danger of having a reservoir overflow and scour out a dam. I can still
recall the image of Bruce Babbit on TV in jeans and a flannel shirt explaining
what would happen if Stewart Mountain Dam collapsed. Fortunately, it didn't,
but the flooding took out all but two bridges, and Interstate 10 was closed for
months until the bridges were replaced.
NWS Phoenix is not giving an estimate in the forecast yet. Plus, we have
another storm arriving this weekend. The one arriving late Tuesday is mild in
strength, but very moist. The one for the weekend is pretty strong and will
drive the night temperatures below freezing.
California is in for an extreme soaking this week, with San Francisco
receiving as much as 1.50". As though things there were not bad enough.
