Caught me by surprise too, Chuck. Turn on the camera for the first time, look through the viewfinder, nada. Oh shit! ... Anyway, I step back and look at the screen and it says, 'please extend the lens'.. WTF? Took a bit of fiddling to get the movement down and it works perfectly. A minor extra step each time you fire up the camera but collapsed the thing is tiny! Definitely will be going with me full time now.

I know I've mentioned it here, but not everyone follows my many musings with
careful attention. :-)

It seems a reasonable compromise for size in the 9-18, which I'll seldom if ever be using in a hurry and will spend a lot of time stashed away in bag, pocket, etc., where size matters. Hmmm, I wonder if the new hood will reverse on it; the old one doesn't. At least mine won't, and I've read that other won't, either.

I find it less appealing in a primary lens, such as the M.Z 14-42 kit lens. Grab the camera for a quick shot, and you have to get your finger on the right place on the little latch, release and spin it open.

Panny has it better, at least on the 12-32 for the GMs, It also collapses by turning the zoom ring, but simply uses a stiff-ish detent, rather than a latch. Much easier in use to this Moose.

Both Panny, 14-42 X lens, and Oly, the new 14-42 EZ lens, offer power zoom lenses that automatically extend and collapse as the camera is turned on and off. I have the Panny, and it's ready to go in an instant. The Oly is slightly shorter and has an intriguing accessory auto opening lens cap.

Like Chuck, I checked immediately when I got an OlyAmerica email offering a refurb for an extra 25% off, but it wouldn't jump in to my cart and later disappeared from the page. Just as well; I don't need one at all.

My other objection to the standard Oly kit lens is that it gives the impression it's tiny, and it is small when collapsed. In use, it's almost as long as the 12-50. <http://zone-10.com/tope2/main.php?g2_itemId=6257>
