Pierson's Puppeteers are the species from the Ringworld novels. Two
forelegs and a single hindleg. Eyes on thick "stalks" that also carried the
mouths. Mouths were effectively hands as well. Brain encased in a bony
compartment at the base of the eyestalks. They were Niven's idea for a
possible sentient evolution from a herbivorous herding source species,
rather than an omnivorous or carnivorous source species.
