From CH's reply I have to say not all the time. But if it's bad it
certainly does. If the histogram is drawn from a JPEG it will have 256
bars for each shade of each color. If the posterization is bad it will
show spaces where some bars are totally missing. You can't create
posterization by reducing brightness but you can easily create it by
pushing shadows up too far. For example: Take 3 low brightness values:
3, 4 and 5. Push them up by 2 stops which requires multiplying by 4.
The result is 12, 16 and 20. What were previously contiguous values now
have gaps in between... holes in the histogram.

Does posterization really show in a histogram?

If there's posterization it's pretty minor. If I load it into PS and view the
histogram (even by individual color channel) there's nothing that jumps out at
me.
And, by the way, Ken, I liked those severely punished pixels.

Nice! I like the color and tone. It seems to have some posterization,
don't know if this can be avoided.

Enough of the tie dye stuff. Here is an artistic shot from a photo
shoot last year that the model has finally signed off on.
Processed as a combination of Lightroom and Picasa. This is a heavily
cropped shot from the Panasonic DMC-L1. I think the lens was the
14-42.

Oh, and Chuck, the pixels have been severely punished, so don't expect
to figure out the quality of the lens, sensor, yada yada.
