He's a very successful contractor. I'm sure he can use metric measures
if he chooses to. 72 is no excuse (and he needs none) but simply
indicates the time he was brought up and what he was exposed to in his
youth... like me.
I've never seen metric sized cabinets in the US... at least for home
interiors. Why is your case different?

Well, age is no excuse. My tool boxes contain a full double set of
measuring devices. I need them in my business, cabinets are mostly
metric. So are a lot of other things in buildings. I'd hesitate to hire
a contractor who couldn't at least read a metric tape measure.
