Please accept my heart-felt condolences, Bob. It's never easy; only
time heals. 

I know what it is like; I've had several of my small pets
die in my arms as I realised they were on their way, and I wanted to
comfort them in the process. 

And our dear so-intelligent black-faced
ewe Pippit, reared by me from age 4 days, who I talked to and stroked
her nose while the necessary injection took effect. Quite painless to
her, it apparently screws up the electrical connections between cells.
Seems faster than instantaneous.
