I don't know how many I have, certainly more than you. The older, slower ones are stashed in odd places, now unused. But
the only one that has ever failed was an internal one with pins that bent for the same reason as on Chucks.
Anything is possible, but that many failures, off all the readers a person has, is very unlikely. Even if true, it does
not suggest that they are in general prone to failure.
The technically inclined would be checking Device Manager, drivers and other
ports.
That the computer seems to recognize them with a beep does not necessarily mean that they are capable of full
communications.
