Nope, Tom Wolfe I was pretty sure, and I looked it up:
"You Can't Go Home Again is a novel by Thomas Wolfe published posthumously

My mistake, Moose; thanks for the correction. The Orwell book I was
remembering was "Coming up for Air." Synopsis is at <
