In a situation like that, I avoid using fill flash or a bright/shiney
reflector for the same reason. A "soft" reflector, like a clean white t-shirt,
is usually sufficient to reflect enough light to remove the shadow, and it will
also further reduce the presence of the far background. A diffuser can also be
used, but then you may end up bringing the far background into view.
