And in the spirit of taking Philippe's question at face value, the mile has
certainly not disappeared in Scandinavia, where it is not unusual to hear
distances quoted in miles (but each mile is 10km).

Chris, not entirely true. The UK has not completely embraced the metric
systems and distances - except in the military - are usually expressed in
miles. A number of imperial and metric systems seem to co-exist in relative
harmony.

A mile is a unit of measure used to measure large distances. Was used
through the English-speaking world for centuries, but in the 20th Century
it was abandoned in favor of the Metric Kilometer, except in the USA. The
length of a mile has varied over the years and in different countries. An
American mile is 5280 feet, or 1.6 km.
