I don’t doubt it, Paul, but they are all quite risky, and (my conjecture
follows) I doubt that that aircraft was designed for any sort of aerobatics,
and if the pilot was not normally allowed to perform such manoeuvres he will be
the last person who should attempt it as he will not know anything about the
aircraft’s behaviour. He might have got away with a simple aileron roll,
starting with a high nose attitude, but any pitching action to start with and
he will not have had sufficient height to recover at the back end.
The barrel roll is a very risky manoeuvre at low level, even for those in
aerobatic practice. It is a rolling manoeuvre which can easily require looping
space to recover.
