This turned out to be an almost embarrassingly easy fix in the end.
Firstly, I worked out that I should use google, not the om-list
search, to search the archives; the previous thread on this (same lens,
even) was called 'zoom "creep"', and the quotes confused the search.
Secondly, once I'd found that thread, I took the rubber off, tightened
up all the little screws at the bottom of the sliding section, and that
improved matters somewhat, but not all the way.
Third, easiest, fix: put a strip of black electrical tape lengthwise
down the inner part of the lens body. This provides enough extra girth
that now the sliding section stays where I put it, even when vertical
and I shake it around. This is a _super_ easy fix, and the black tape
matches the black lens body just fine, so there's no real cosmetic
problem either.
(and it's really nice finally having a zoom lens where I can use the
center of the screen to focus, rather than it being half black all the
time..)

The number for the same part on the 85-250mm is CB080400 -- you'll need
two, and the hood just unscrews from the knurled ring at the back. The
nice thing is that the part is known to be available -- it's used to
correct/prevent light leak on the Stylus Zoom.
