Easy to be smug when you've never been properly invaded, hey?
A few, but also significant numbers behind the lines who had been fighting as
partisans for a very long time. They did a lot of work preparing the ground. Of
course, not 'troops' and a lot of them were politically far left so their
efforts were not exactly rewarded or acknowledged afterwards. But a lot died,
especially when the advance stalled on the peninsula and left them exposed.
