Shortly after making the turn to the south, the cycling path runs
alongside the Kyrene Canal, which was one an irrigation lateral for citrus
orchards:

When the path crosses from Tempe to Chandler, the landscaping makes an
abrupt change for the worse:

though the path itself is beneath somewhat mature trees, which is sometimes a
relief, such as in the summer:

This couple can be seen almost every morning:

she is not entirely wheelchair-bound, and will try walking as much as a hundred
feet from time to time.
About a half mile from the street crossing there is a narrow bridge that
once provided access to an irrigation gate seen on the left side:

I doubt that the gtate has been excercised at all in the last 2-3 decades as
the area to the east (left) is now nothing but a bedroom community with a few
semi-agricultural lots having pet horses that probably never see a saddle in
their entire lives.
