I looked at some of the images on Paul Braun's site beyond the one cited and found this one:

"Bear Layin' It Down

John "Bear" Kuehl works on laying the double-tracked line up the second helix on our club layout. A helix is a spiral of track used to get a train from one level of a multi-level layout to another in a small amount of space."

The best example of a helix railroad track I have seen are the spiral tunnels on the CP Rail track between Field in British Columbia and Lake Louise in Alberta. Trains with upwards of 10 locos can be seen exiting a tunnel going in one direction with wagons going into a tunnel 50 or perhaps 100 feet above or below in diametrically the opposite direction. There are several helix tunnels in the complex and are readily visible from the nearly Trans Canada Highway. Somewhere I have photos taken several years ago.

Paul .... this is a loco coming to a railroad near you soon. A piece on
CBC radio in the last few weeks said that UP is investing in a
rejuvenation project and that these wheels will be rolling again in a
year or three.

I had a hectic weekend, so I didn't get to post last week's photos in a
timely manner. So, if you go here:

You will see real-life railroad shots from this past Saturday along the
Chicago, South Shore and South Bend railroad and you will also see some
model railroading shots from my visit to a friend's home layout last
night. However, Dean's layout is larger than a lot of club layouts,
including ours.. when he and his wife built their house, he planned
for the
layout and had the dividing walls built into the basement. It takes up
almost the entire 30x64' space.

I asked Dean to pose in front of the steel mill section of the layout:

I also got a photo of his beagle, Peanut, who greets visitors and follows
them around the basement:

Enjoy. C&C encouraged and appreciated.
