John, there are several strategies that I employ:

1. Turn Infrared cleaning OFF.

2. Scan beyond the margins, include as much of the rebate as possible.

3. Scan 48 bit tiff in RGB. Yes, color, not monochrome. This creates
an automatic "three-pass" scan.

4. When scanning, on the Color tab, have the first setting set to off.
Use the on-screen histogram and then adjust the exposure on the first
tab to get the histogram off the ends. (some people scan the image as
a positive [image] and then invert in post). Save your settings for
the rest of the roll and similar.

5. In your editor, invert (if necessary) and apply a gamma to the
image to get the contrast back in the neighborhood.
