[OM] Nikon film scanners and Vue Scan

I now have my Nikon 9000 film scanner attached to a dedicated XP machine 
and the Nikon Scan software loaded.
The machine is not connected to the internet.

 The scanner works just fine.

I have downloaded a paid for pro version of Vue Scan to the machine.

With the scanner powered up and Vue Scan active, Vue Scan cannot detect 
the scanner and tells me so in a help message.
The Nikon scan software is not active.

What else should I be doing to activate Vue Scan and have it work as my 
primary scanning software?
