Your suspicions are correct. (In the interest of accuracy, VCR is the term for
the overall tech. VideoCassette Recorder. The two standards in the consumer
field were Betamax and VHS).
JVC licensed the crap out of VHS to anybody with a checkbook. Sony only
licensed to I believe 2 other companies.
