John,
I know you've gotten other good responses, but here's what I have to offer:
Just last night I installed my Minolta 5400 II scanner on my Win 7 Pro
64-bit machine. I had an "updated" (2009) driver for it (can't remember where I
got it) and installed the Minolta software that came with the scanner with
no problem. A test scan using the Minolta software went fine. Ran in
"native" Win 7 mode, not XP mode. Have you checked the Web for updated
drivers?
I think Vista drivers will work with 7 sometimes, as has been mentioned.
And there's always Vuescan.
HTH,
Greg

Does anyone have experience using a Nikon film scanner under the XP
compatibility mode of Windows Pro 7 ?
I have a Nikon Super Cool Scan 9000 scanner which I have used
successfully with an XP machine. This machine is now terminally sick and
is being replaced with a Win Pro 7 one. To the best of my knowledge XP
is the last and latest operating system under which the scanner was
designed to work.
I am anxious to keep the scanner in use for as long as possible even
though Nikon no longer appears able or willing to provide ongoing
support and XP is being abandoned by Microsoft.
