Out here we have the Navajo, Papago (now Tohono Odam), Gila, Havasupai,
Apache, Hopi, and a scattering of Pueblo tribes that the Spanish did not
succeed in wiping out after the Pueblo Uprising. The displacement of children
into boarding schools to wipe out their cultures by the Christian churches and
US governmnet did not work in the end, and the federal ban on sweat lodges and
Sundances wasn't lifted until the 1990s. So much for religious freedom.
