I use a 3GS as my primary phone, and have an iPad (4) on iOS 6.1.2. I
agree that OS upgrades can be downgrades too, to performance, but so far
have been able to work around any forced upgrades. I have no pressing
desire to go to iOS 7 for various reasons, and haven't had to. For
jailbroken users, there's a quick and easy patch to that SSL bug a month
or two ago, so no forced upgrade was required. I jailbroke my wife's
iPhone 4S expressly for that purpose, to install that patch and not have
to go to iOS 7 on her phone. My 3GS still runs some iteration of iOS 5,
which I just never got around to updating to iOS 6. I probably still could
if I wanted to (bootrom exploit would probably allow it).
