Yes, for more than one. They exist in part because there are patterns in humans
and their behaviors. They also tend to
hang on past their time as a way to maintain old prejudices and oppressions.
And yet, cultures do evolve. Women have the vote, Little Black Sambo is gone
from public view, gays have most of the
same rights as everyone else, if not yet always as easily exercised.
Isn't it time to retire the 'little woman' who gets hysterical when her 'big
man' buys what she considers toys, but may
be placated with offerings of girl stuff (of equal or greater value)? It's such
a demeaning stereotype, for both parties.
I have no wish to pry into or try to change individual relationships, whatever
arrangements work for consenting adults.
I do think it would be useful to drop this stereotype from public discussion.
Even if only so we don't look like idiots
to our children. ;-)
The world can become a better place, a little step at a time. :-)
