I'm not sure I understand the question. Like other activities, various people
do it different ways. I can't imagine
anyone carrying a tent like Brian showed except in a vehicle.
In car camping spots, I've seen everything from individuals to large groups,
zero to many tents.
Backpacking in the high country, I've both shared a tent and slept alone. I've
personally never gone entirely on my own;
I like company - and support.
In rough country, it is nice to know there's someone who can stop the bleeding,
drag one to a safe place, and go for
help. :-) I'm not being facetious; I've gone places a couple of days serious
walking from help, and where it would be
very easy to get seriously injured. I don't know how much cell phone service
there is up there now. I know there are
satellite phones and emergency transmitters. There were no means at all to
contact the outside world back then.
But I've known backpacking loners.
