I'm not surprised by the $2 and I'll bet they weren't the best grade Hoya
product either. But as I know from the local store, the margins are so thin on
the cameras themselves and the competition so fierce from Walmart style stores
(Harvey Norman here) that they can't afford to miss any opportunity to value
add and sell up.
I'm reminded of that brilliant Peter Sellers Elstree comedy, 'The Greatest Show
on Earth' about running a pokey little cinema. They made all their money from
selling drinks, nothing from ticket sales, and so showed desert dramas and
turned up the heating.
