Compelling, indeed. However, I found something rather disturbing about
these photos--something I've been seeing from Steve's work over the
last decade. They have gotten "too good". His images have a look of
"produced" to them that look too good to be real. The spontaneity in
the photos looks contrived as a result. I expect a certain level of
"grungy" to these pictures. Maybe something as simple as the piece of
trash or a stray dog moseying through the scene.
I'm not suggesting that there is anything fake about the images--far
from that. What I am saying is that the photos look like they are
taken by a commercial photographer, not a photojournalist. This is
something I've been sensing about his work from the last 10-15 years,
but this set of photographs takes it to another whole level.
It's as though he has turned into a stock photographer first--shooting
images intended for advertising layouts, not feature stories.
