Yes, I think the experiment with the background was a failure, other than
the balance of foreground and background exposure. I think that part was
OK.
I did not make notes on exposure, but I think I was around f8 or 11 on
these. The lens was the DZ 50/2 on E-5. Even with pretty good working
distance from the lens to the flower, lens and subject were pretty close.
I had to hold the main light behind me in order the bounce it between the
camera and the flower (or I thought I needed to -- that's what I did
anyway).
I would have to agree the first one is a hard sell. I found an alternative
that is probably overall better:

I cleaned up the background since it was proving such a distraction.
I'll pass on your comments on the flowers to the lady of the house!
