BBC's main television News 24 broadcasts (eg at 1pm and 6pm) have a signer super
imposed in one corner when viewed in the UK. The same programme is simultaneous
ly transmitted on BBC1 without the signer. It presumably allows for last minut
e text changes, eg by the weather forecaster, or for breaking news, without the
curious grammatical constructions/gaffes which occur when simultaneous subtitlin
g is used. And some of our TV sets are not programmed to show sub-titles anyway.
