The OM era flashes will work on any system with central sync contact and ground
through the edges of the shoe. There's a
little pin on the bottom of the foot which raises the secondary connection pins
up into the foot unless it falls into
the matching depression on an OM shoe.

Hmmm. As long as you don't screw up the contacts, i.e. either foot or shoe has
only the basic center contact, or the
other pins happen not to touch - the flash will work in the two modes that
don't even require a camera to work properly.

Some folks might have guessed that without experimentation. :-)

OTOH, the range of experiment doesn't seem to me to be sufficient to make the
statement "the flash has no more than 3 or
4 pins on the bottom of the foot" an unsafe generalization. Particularly as one
test case was a T32, which won't
misconnect, no matter what's on the shoe.

Visual and electrical inspection of µ4/3 shoes shows that most of the bottom of
the shoe is grounded, so any pins in
that area will be shorted. This would include at least some Canon flash control
pins. Fortunately, sensible engineers
have designed it so that doesn't cause trouble in Manual Mode.
