<rant> we use DirecTV, but it's the same for Dish for Comcrap. Not only is
the content on the hard drive encrypted, but it's keyed. Not just keyed to
that DVR, mind you, but keyed TO THAT HARD DRIVE AND THAT DRIVE ALONE.
That means if your drive starts to exhibit preliminary failure symptoms,
you can't clone it onto another drive and go on your merry way. If the
hard drive dies, all of your programs die along with it since even if you
manage to copy it all onto a fresh drive, the draconian "anti-piracy"
schemes on these things won't let you view it.
Why they can't just key it to your access card is beyond me. Clueless,
greedy and over-controlling media companies are to blame.
