Everything about the design of those cathedrals was deliberate, from broad to
minute details.
This one took several generations to complete, starting before the Renaissance
and being structurally completed when it
was in full flower. Complete exterior decoration wasn't complete until the late
19th. century. From conception to
completion of all aspects covered a period from the late Medieval period,
through the Renaissance and well into the
Industrial Revolution.
It was typical for a cathedral built in medieval times to take generations, and
every aspect was designed to fit the
symbolic traditions of the Church.
I'm sure there was in this one hardly a hidden corner the details of which
wasn't given great and lengthy consideration
and then designed by a great artist of the time.
