That's close to matching my one experience. We were less than 1/4 mile
from home on a suburban street. It was about 9 pm on an early fall
night. I had just turned right from a stop sign and started
accelerating. I couldn't have been going more than 25mph, more likely
20. A doe ran out from between two houses straight into the side of my
car and essentially killed herself.
I never hit them but, when I lived in Woodstock, NY (yes, that
Woodstock) when I would come home late on snowy winter nights I would
often find a herd of deer just standing in the road. They never seemed
intimidated by the car or the headlights. I had to drive very slowly
through the herd before they would move out of the way. Escaped cows
weren't much better. :-)
