Not wishing to be contrary :-) I do think that a substantial proportion of UK
forests, being
planted on otherwise hostile sites such as moorland and bogs, is Sitka Spruce
(Picea
sitchensis), a dreadfully prickly plant, all the way from western North
America.
Not a very strong timber, but useful for paper-making at least. (AFAIK)
