I keep getting "reminders" from LinkedIn that so-and-so has endorsed me
for this or that skill, and I need to accept said endorsements. I'm also
getting reminders to connect with other people or "complete" my
profile. And notices that this or that company is looking for people
"just like me," often for jobs that have nothing to do with my
profession, no less my specialty.
So for me, it's been nothing but a source of annoying spam. Plus, I get
a little creeped out that they seem to know who my friends and
non-professional interests are, both from Facebook and otherwise. I
never told them, and I certainly never let them into my address book. So
they must be doing some data mining somewhere to find out.
Facebook: "I love chocolate ice cream."
LinkedIn: "My skill set includes the successful consumption of
progressively lucrative quantities of chocolate ice cream. I have
developed a powerful and effective business plan to leverage this skill
to further synergistic successes for a diverse Fortune 500 client base."
Your mileage may vary.
