Thanks, everybody, for the kind remarks. Many of you rode it out with
me all those years ago. A couple have become good friends through it
all, too.
Karen had one major incentive to surviving. She had two young girls
that she wanted to see grow up. After the first round of cancer, she
was quick to put it all behind her and get back to normal. The second
time, she realized just how vulnerable she was and had a pretty
dramatic change in mindset. Even after the second round, there were
several scares after that. It was pretty stressful for a while. The
girls are up in high school now, but her desire to see them grown up
has not diminished. She (and I too) value them greatly and know that
life is too fragile to just take for granted.
