Hi Chris, Ken, and others who may have read my question.
I was about to post a note that I have diagnosed the problem, and it can
be attributed to the old catch-all, "pilot error".
I took Ken's suggestion and joined the Fuji X Forum. Someone there
suggested I look at the EXIF data from the "black" images. As I did
that, I tried to recall exactly what I was doing at the time of the problem.
To make a long story short, I thought I had the ISO set to Auto ISO with
a 3200 limit. The data shows that it remained at ISO 200 throughout the
outing. Consequently, when I stopped down to try some zone focusing,
the exposure decreased accordingly. There was an image there, just very
much underexposed.
Thanks for your interest.
