I am scared stiff of using ball heads, and I have stuck with multi-axis
heads. The Manfrotto 804 and the Velbon PH-250B are both reliable, sturdy,
light-weight tripod heads. I have yet to find a tripod sturdier than the
Manfrotto 3001, though it is a bit heavy to carry around for field work.
There's an eBay seller in Canada who has a couple of new Velbon 530 tripods
with the PH-250 head (#130728399303).
