Reminds me that my wife's uncle (John Craven) was a Marine chaplain on
Iwo Jima that day and somewhere we have a picture of him standing with
some other officers while that flag raising is going on in the
background. I really do need to dig that picture out and see that it's
properly preserved. He retired as a Navy captain and chaplain of the
Marine Corps. He was also there to comfort the Kennedy family at
Bethesda Naval Hospital when President Kennedy was brought there after
the assassination in Dallas. Quite a guy.
