I started with DOS when it was on a mini-mainframe newspaper front-end system,
in a shielded, climate-controlled room. Two towers with a bus for a bridge to
provide concurrent redundancy. We had a whopping 64K of memory and were on the
cutting edge. Worked with PCs since DOS, through the earliest iteration of
Windows, right up to XP Pro. Switched to Mac because I encountered one annoying
issue after another to deal with on my PC, which I could do, but which I
thought was a massive waste of my time and energy. When I found out Adobe would
send me the Mac version of CS2 for $5, I switched. It cost me, but I switched,
and the extra initial costs have more than been recouped by years of being in a
better mood, not to mention being more productive.
Every day, five times a day, I get down on my knees, head toward Cupertino, and
give thanks to the god I am skeptical about that I had the good sense to switch
to Mac. You people can through all the logic you want at me, but I know you're
all biased because I know I'm biased. I've not only used both systems, but I've
_used_ both systems, and not fucking around with anti-virus and malware crap
alone is worth the price of admission. And the only learning curve that threw
me was that when I first switched to Mac I tended to over think everything. I
mean _everything_. You don't have to over think with a Mac. You just have to do
what you want to do. Need an example? Here's one: Uninstall. Drag it to the
trash and it's gone. If it happens to be an overly complicated program, you
might have to go to the Library and get another folder or two and trash that,
too. But I have uninstalled enough Windows programs to know what a royal
screaming pain in the ass it is.
I know others have different uses other than photography for their computers,
but I don't--other than regular email and online browsing and, ah, research.
Hell, I don't even do porn. I want to sit down at my computer, load up my
images, and go to work. I don't want to be hectored by constant Windows
messages about this, that and the other--and I don't want to be constantly
reminded that my computer is at risk because I haven't updated by virus and
malware "condoms" lately. From time to time my Mac politely notifies me that
there are some upgrades available for my computer, and would I like to install
them now or wait until a more convenient time? That's the way I like it.
If this sounds like a pro-Mac screed, it is. I love my Mac, I will not switch
back to Windows for any reason or any price. If I found I couldn't work with
Mac anymore, I simply would drop out of the electronic world. Nothing,
_nothing_ would send me back to that cyber hell we call Windows, which, after
all, is nothing but an effing Mac ripoff in the first place. And why use an
inferior ripoff instead of the real thing? Eh?
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. If you agree, fine. If you don't agree,
that's fine, too. But you're not getting my Mac until you pry it out of my
cold, dead fingers.
