Exactly. Even ignoring any color, contrast, etc. manipulation, JPEGs often have
artifacts at the pixel level that are
much less apparent in carefully processed Raw files.

I agree. There are E-thingie folks who would not. The famous Oly colors,
especially skin tones, tend to diminish in
magic when processed from Raw in anything other than Oly software, which
applies the same computations as the camera.
Or so I am told. When I shoot both JPEG and Raw with Pens or the E-M5, I see no
color differences worth note between the
JPEGs and Raw processed with ACR. But then, I mess with stuff. :-)
