The alternative is this http://www.bowelscreening.scot.nhs.uk/ - a
nationwide bi-annual screening for all aged 50-74.
No 'scopes involved, so not even any call for a 1-9 focusing screen, but
completely painless. I imagine the cost per patient is relatively low, and
the facilities required for the screening are nil - but scaled up over the
population is a big number. But that doesn't mean it isn't cost effective,
especially with a take-up rate of just over 50%. A similar programme in
England for to 60-69 cohort is running at GBP77million.
