No, not OBLIGED - and most Australians aren't actually aware of this.
You are required to attend a booth and have your name crossed off.
You don't actually have to vote once that's done.
But it's still referred to as compulsory voting.
All elections - local, state and federal, are overseen by the AEC - no Florida
problem here.
And yes I was once fined - for refusing to vote in a city Council election.
(Both candidates were anathema to me but that was not considered an adequate
excuse).
Of course, there are other changes you'd have to make - the booth is close by
(usually a Primary School) and it's on Saturday, not a working day.
